‘Off the Charts’: Hospitality, Retail on Road to Recovery, But Employee Shortage Poses Problem

One problem that Stern sees that can be a nuisance for both locals and tourists is the lack of parking spaces for people working or shopping in the Miami Beach area.

Last year, the city of Miami Beach issued a request for letters of interest, or RFLI, to build Class A office space on three municipal parking lots in Miami Beach between Alton Road and Meridian Ave. Stern said an eventual reorganization will make room for more well-lit parking spaces, making the area more walkable for consumers. The lots could also be used as overflow parking for places like the Convention Center, Washington Ave. and the Bass Art Museum.

“It will also reduce street parking because people won’t be driving around looking for parking spaces,” Stern said. “It’ll create connectivity between all these streets as well.”

Michael Comras, president and CEO of real estate brokerage company The Comras Co. of Florida, said despite challenges amid COVID-19, there are a lot of exciting upcoming developments. Among them: CocoWalk, an upscale lifestyle center in the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, which was recently redeveloped.

“We’re approaching 100% leased. We leased a lot of space. We have a lot of food and beverage and a lot of health and beauty offerings that the community really wants,” Comras said.

In August, CocoWalk welcomed five more tenants, including GlossLab, a nail studio from New York which is opening its first Miami location in summer 2022 and has hospitality entrepreneur David Grutman as one of its investors. Others include boutique fitness studio Antidote Wellness Labs, Saint-Tropez jewelry brand Gas Bijoux, 3D Brow Studio and Skin Lab by Barba Skin Clinic, founded by Harvard-educated dermatologist Dr. Alicia Barba. Restaurants Sushi Garage and Botanico Gin & Cookhouse are expected to open soon.

The idea is to make it easier for people to access their favorite establishments without having to go far, according to Comras.
